3M Bairhugger warming gown

patient warming gown

An interesting trend occurs while patients are waiting for surgery, their body temperature decreases making it difficult to maintain a normal body temperature during surgery. The Bairhugger warming gown with an insulated layer of Thinsulate, uses the patientโ€™s own body temperature to maintain an above average temperature prior to surgery. During surgery, the gown is connected to a warm air blower that keeps the body at a warm temperature, optimal for surgical conditions.

Patient comfort

A careful balance of branding colors, material choices, and patient comfort were looked at early on during development. Concept sketches were leveraged to look at a variety of form-fitting styles with unique surgical features, like deploying a secondary warming blanket for unique surgical procedures.

Scale Prototypes

Illustrator line-drawings were generated to quickly go from concept to engineering-ready drawings. Small-scale prototypes were also created to quickly address any feasibility concerns with the manufacturing engineers based in the manufacturing facilities. The prototypes were essential in communicating the unique fit and features being explored.
